110 years, 110 works

The Museum of Fine Arts of Bilbao celebrates its 110 anniversary with a grand exhibition

And to celebrate it the exhibition 110 Years 110 Works was inaugurated last May, andcan be visited until September. The exhibition brings together in chronological order 110 works between paintings, sculptures and video-creation-selected with the aim of showing the main centers of interest of the collection, its ancient, modern and contemporary masters. As the director of the museum Miguel Zugaza explains in the text of the catalog published for the occasion, “The selection responds to a criterion of quality, without a doubt, but also to the intention of describing a panorama as complete as possible according to historical and geographic criteria”.

The exhibition includes works by great masters from all periods such as El Greco, Zurbarán, van Dyck, Goya, Sorolla, Gauguin and contemporary artists such as Francis Bacon, Antoni Tàpies, Jorge Oteiza, Eduardo Chillida and Eduardo Arroyo.

From its foundation in 1908 to the present, the museum has assembled a collection of recognized quality with an encyclopedic development and a main chronology that extends from the 13th century to the 20th century. The collection includes, today, more than 14,000 works of art: 1,621 paintings, 489 sculptures, 884 pieces of decorative arts, 11,152 works on paper and, next to them, about 3,000 works in deposit.
