Balenciaga Open Night

Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum proposes a night-time visit animated by live music

On 4 August, Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum proposes a night-time visit to the current exhibition, animated by live music by the DESCARGA LIBRE quartet and DJ MAKALA. With this initiative the museum will become the stage for a meeting between different artistic languages, and offers visitors an unusual perspective of the building and its collections.

Mikel Makala (beatbox, sampler), Jimmy Bidaurreta (keyboards), Denis Barzaga (percussion), JM Dorronsoro (trumpet).

A few years after bringing out the album Unexpected Tapas (2011), the Basque-German DJ and musical agitator Mikel Makala and the producer and musical director of the Gasteiz Big Band, Jimmy Bidaurreta, join forces to create a new project going by the name of Descarga Libre. The Basque duo is back with Cuba’s descarga genre. Their aim is to recover that coming together of sounds ranging from Latin, jazz funk and descarga itself to the Nuyorican salsa of famous labels like Fania, in line with the new dance music trends. For their live performances they are accompanied by Denis Barzaga, a seasoned Cuban percussionist settled in San Sebastian, and the veteran trumpet-player from Donostia J.M. “Dizzy Do” Dorronsoro, assiduous musician on the Basque jazz scene in recent decades.
