Rei Kawakubo/Comes des Garcons. Art of the In-Between
The MET Museum dedicates a highly anticipated retrospective to the japanese designer.
If there is a fashion exhibition this year that can be considered a success even before opening its gates, that is “Rei Kawakubo/ Comes des Garçons. Art of the In-Between”, that will be held at the MET Museum from the 4th of May. This retrospective dedicated to the Japanese designer has caused major expectation from the moment it was announced, Kawakubo being one of the most revolutionary and avant-garde designers of the last century.
The retrospective, the second dedicated to a living designer (the first one honored Yves Saint Laurent), will examine her long career since she founded the label Commes des Garçons in 1969. Focusing on her disruptive character, the exhibition will be divided in eight sections, each of them addressing a certain comparison: Fashion/Anti-Fashion, Design/Not Design, Model/Multiple, Then/Now, High/Low, Self/Other, Object/Subject, and Clothes/Not Clothes.
Kawakubo is best-known as an example of conceptual design and for combining in her garments multiple artistic inspirations that refuse to follow rules and trends. Her career will also be the theme of this year’s Met Gala, one of the most important events of the fashion world.
