Fashion in Motion: Inspired by Balenciaga

Students from Central Saint Martins show their designs for the project Balenciaga and the Popular Costume

Students of the prestigious Central Saint MArtins presented last Friday at the Victoria & Albert museum of London their work for Balenciaga and the Popular Costume program, in collaboration with Cristobal Balenciaga Museoa in Getaria. At the event Fashion in Motion: Inspired by Balenciaga, the young designers showed 15 outfits inspired by the archives of the museum.

The students of BA Fashion Design Womens Wear, BA Fashion Print and BA Fashion Communication of Central Saint Martins visited last January the museum in Getaria, where they saw the exhibition Coal and Velvet. Views on popular costumes by Ortiz Echagüe and Balenciaga, that delves into the roots of the designer and how folklore and tradition inspired his designs.

After the trip, students designed a complete outfit, assessed by both institutions, where they had to reinterpret the popular costume and study the procedures used by Cristobal Balenciaga. The final result, along with documentation given by the students about their creative process, is shown as an online exhibition created by the students of Fashion Communication, that you can watch here.
