MARGIELA: THE HERMES YEARS, MoMu
The MoMu museum of Antwerp will display, from the 31st of March to the 27th of August, the exhibition Margiela-The Hermès Years, which follows the collections that the Belgian designer made for the Parisian house from 1997 to 2003.
Margiela, known for his iconoclast vision of fashion, was an unusual choice from Jean-Louis Dumas, CEO of the label. Hermès, famous for its luxurious leather goods and distinct classic style, distanced itself from other Parisian fashion houses with the election of a modern and daring designer that had as a standard techniques like the recycling of materials and deconstruction.
Prior to his start at Hermès, Margiela had already stood out in his own fashion house, Maison Martin Margiela, founded in 1988. There, he began to forge his image as a ground-breaking designer, innovating in fields such as communication and sales: from his garments’ white labels to his refusal to give interviews or make public appearances. His Parisian atelier, completely white, accompanies the uniforms of the personnel; the legendary blouse blanche, a nod to “creative collective”.
During his years in Hermès, Margiela left twelve sober and timeless collections, with neutral color palettes and sophistication based on comfort and quality of fabrics. This exhibition is, undoubtedly, a unique opportunity to learn more about a designer that keeps being a huge inspiration in the fashion world and to discover one of his most celebrated phases.
