Teresa Lanceta
Teresa Lanceta: ’Farewell to the rombhus’, from November 3, 2016 to January 29, 2017.
Azkuna Zentroa is pleased to present ’Adiós al rombo’ (Farewell to the Rhombus), exhibition that features the work of Teresa Lanceta. A coproduction with Fundación Montemadrid’s La Casa Encendida, curated by Nuria Enguita Mayo.
The show offers a tour of this artist’s personal universe, where weaves, geometric designs and folk art intertwine with the emotional nuances and complexities of an investigation centred on communities of women weavers in the Middle Atlas. The exhibition features woven fabrics, paintings, drawings, a text and several videos compiled from her interviews with both women of that region and relatives who migrated to Spain.
In addition to Lanceta’s work, the exhibition includes documentation on folk art from regions bordering the Sahara Desert, as well as on the work of young artists interested in traditional craftsmanship and migration. There are also two collaborations: Nicolas Malevé, who created a digital map of patterns and objects of the Middle Atlas, and Lot Amorós, producer of an interactive audio-visual installation based on a binary code.
With a BA in Modern and Contemporary History and a PhD in Art History, Teresa Lanceta (Barcelona, 1951) currently teaches at the Massana Design School in Barcelona. She works with textile and video art and, among other subjects; she has researched the folk art of Moroccan textiles, fifteenth-century Spanish rugs and women workers in the tobacco industry.
She writes for journals such as Arte y Parte, Horizons Maghrébins, Debates sobre arte and Concreta. Her solo exhibitions include La alfombra roja (Museu Tèxtil I d’Indumentària, Barcelona, 1989), Tejidos marroquíes: Teresa Lanceta (Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid, and Villa des Arts, Casablanca, 2000), Tejida abstracción (Museo de Arte Moderno de Ibiza and Museo de Teruel, 2001), El paso del Ebro (Galería Espacio Mínimo, Madrid, 2015) and Adiós al rombo (La Casa Encendida, Madrid; Azkuna Zentroa, Bilbao; and Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Vigo, 2016).
She has also participated in numerous group shows, such as De una parte a otra (Gezira Art Center, Cairo; Lonja del Pescado, Alicante; and Musée d’Angers-Université Le Mirail, Toulouse, 2009), How to (…) things that don’t exist (31st São Paulo Biennial, 2014), El contrato (Azkuna Zentroa, Bilbao, 2014) and La réplica infiel (Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo, Madrid, 2016). In 2011 she presented Cierre es la respuesta [Closing Is the Answer], a documentary about female employees of the Alicante Tobacco Factory, at the Centro Cultural Las Cigarreras in Alicante.
