AVAF, the new and amazing exhibition at MATE

The renowned brazilian artist Eli Sudbrack - avaf, arrives for the first time to Peru to inaugurate his exhibition "abstracto viajero andinos fetichizados", inspired by the Iconography Wari.

avaf – abstracto viajero andinos fetichizados

In “abstracto viajero andinos fetichizados”, the artist undergoes an inclusive creation process, and his designs are materialized in woven carpets at  Elvia Paucar’s atelier, a peruvian artisan. The staggered motifs of the pre-Columbian textiles of the Wari culture leave the borders of the fabric that contains them to invade the room, covering the entire floor.

Different masculine faces or, in the artist’s words, “priests of the jungle”, appear on the walls covered in wallpapers designed by avaf, and staggered structures installed in them allow us to walk the room not only horizontally, but also vertically, work from different layers, angles and perspectives, while listening to the music of Delia González, friend and collaborator of the artist.

In room II of temporary exhibitions of the museum will be projected videos of the same artist, among which stands out a compilation of records of several events as openings, performances and moments of inspiration of the artist that he has documented with his cell phone through several years.

avaf (Rio de Janeiro 1968), also known as Assume Vivid Astro Focus (avaf), her work consists mainly of effusive immersion installations that simultaneously function as multimedia spaces, exhibitions, political declarations, among others. His work has been exhibited at the Whitney Museum, New York; the New Museum, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art, Sao Paulo; Frieze Art Fair, London; Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami; among others.
