Balenciaga started lookingfor inspiration in the iconography of the Spanish popular costume, especially noticeable in his designs of the 1940s and 1950s, to progressively become more and more influenced by the religious iconography. In the 1960s, Balenciaga started turning his designs into an absolute purity of lines
The orange dress in the picture reflects Balenciaga’s preference for smooth, minimalist silhouettes, rather like Ortiz Echagüe’s monks, and showcases his creative prowess when it comes to designing patterns which stand out for their geometry and the interplay between overlapping planes. Above all, it also reflects Balenciaga’s immense skill for turning tradition into cutting edge fashion.
