Craft the leather

The most special formative program in vegetal-leather of Italy

Last
week we had the opportunity of visiting an incredibly interesting project
taking place at  Tuscany (Italy), “Craft
the leather”. This formative program aimed at young designer from the best
fashion school around the globe is organized by the Genuine Italian
Vegetable-Tanned Leather Consortium since 2012. There we saw how the students,
alongside their professors, worked at the traditional studio.

The program consists of three phases, beginning
with a one-week formative workshop where participants learn about the
production process of the Leather District, discovering new techniques and
experimenting with them.

During the second phase, the students go back
to their fashion schools where they must create a three-piece collection usging
the leather chosen during their trip to Tuscany.

Finally, in the last phase the pieces are
showcased at one of the most important leather fair of the world, where a jury
votes for their favorite. The winner is rewarded with a scholarship.

The Genuine Italian Vegetable Tanned Leather Consortium
was founded in 1994 by a small group of Tuscan tanners and today there are more
than 20 associated tanneries, all of them operating in Tuscany and sharing the
same passion for vegetable-tanned leather and the same standards of production.
