SPANISH COSTUMES: DARKNESS AND LIGHT

The second exhibition of the Spanish Season of Palais Galliera examines the history of popular costume

If some weeks ago we
talked about Balenciaga, L’Oeuvre au Noir (that you can visit at
Museé Bourdelle until July 16^th), today we bring the second
exhibition from the Spanish Season of the Palais Galliere. Spanish Costumes:
Darkness and Light opens today at Maison Victor Hugo, and can de seen until
September 24^th.

The exhibition examines
the popular costumes of Spain from the end of the 18^th century to
the beginning of the 20^th century, with over 40 garments and accessories
in display. The showcase presents emblematic pieces from different Spanish provinces,
representative of their own traditions, customs and religious beliefs.

But the exhibition is not only centered on the costumes used for celebrations, it also focuses on the importance of traditional work attires. As they say: “This ‘poetry of the ordinary’ is elevated to the level of art and craft”. The exhibitions is organized in partnership with El Museo del Traje of Madrid and accompained by a selection of photographs of Jose Ortiz Echagüe.
